* PM: Add facility for advanced testing of async suspend/resumeRafael J. Wysocki2010-02-261-0/+14
| | | | | | | | | | | | Add configuration switch CONFIG_PM_ADVANCED_DEBUG for compiling in extra PM debugging/testing code allowing one to access some PM-related attributes of devices from the user space via sysfs. If CONFIG_PM_ADVANCED_DEBUG is set, add sysfs attribute power/async for every device allowing the user space to access the device's power.async_suspend flag and modify it, if desired. * PCI PM: Run-time callbacks for PCI bus typeRafael J. Wysocki2010-02-221-0/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | Introduce run-time PM callbacks for the PCI bus type. Make the new callbacks work in analogy with the existing system sleep PM callbacks, so that the drivers already converted to struct dev_pm_ops can use their suspend and resume routines for run-time PM without modifications. * PM: Introduce core framework for run-time PM of I/O devices (rev. 17)Rafael J. Wysocki2009-08-231-0/+14
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Introduce a core framework for run-time power management of I/O devices. Add device run-time PM fields to 'struct dev_pm_info' and device run-time PM callbacks to 'struct dev_pm_ops'. Introduce a run-time PM workqueue and define some device run-time PM helper functions at the core level. Document all these things. Special thanks to Alan Stern for his help with the design and multiple detailed reviews of the pereceding versions of this patch and to Magnus Damm for testing feedback. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. * PM/Hibernate: Move NVS routines into a seperate file (v2).Cornelia Huck2009-06-121-0/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The *_nvs_* routines in swsusp.c make use of the io*map() functions, which are only provided for HAS_IOMEM, thus breaking compilation if HAS_IOMEM is not set. Fix this by moving the *_nvs_* routines into hibernate_nvs.c, which is only compiled if HAS_IOMEM is set. * container freezer: implement freezer cgroup subsystemMatt Helsley2008-10-201-3/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch implements a new freezer subsystem in the control groups framework. It provides a way to stop and resume execution of all tasks in a cgroup by writing in the cgroup filesystem. The freezer subsystem in the container filesystem defines a file named freezer.state. Writing "FROZEN" to the state file will freeze all tasks in the cgroup. Subsequently writing "RUNNING" will unfreeze the tasks in the cgroup. Reading will return the current state. * Examples of usage : # mkdir /containers/freezer # mount -t cgroup -ofreezer freezer /containers # mkdir /containers/0 # echo $some_pid > /containers/0/tasks to get status of the freezer subsystem : # cat /containers/0/freezer.state RUNNING to freeze all tasks in the container : # echo FROZEN > /containers/0/freezer.state # cat /containers/0/freezer.state FREEZING # cat /containers/0/freezer.state FROZEN to unfreeze all tasks in the container : # echo RUNNING > /containers/0/freezer.state # cat /containers/0/freezer.state RUNNING This is the basic mechanism which should do the right thing for user space task in a simple scenario. It's important to note that freezing can be incomplete. In that case we return EBUSY. This means that some tasks in the cgroup are busy doing something that prevents us from completely freezing the cgroup at this time. After EBUSY, the cgroup will remain partially frozen -- reflected by freezer.state reporting "FREEZING" when read. The state will remain "FREEZING" until one of these things happens: 1) Userspace cancels the freezing operation by writing "RUNNING" to the freezer.state file 2) Userspace retries the freezing operation by writing "FROZEN" to the freezer.state file (writing "FREEZING" is not legal and returns EIO) 3) The tasks that blocked the cgroup from entering the "FROZEN" state disappear from the cgroup's set of tasks. * pm: boot time suspend selftestDavid Brownell2008-07-241-0/+11
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Boot-time test for system suspend states (STR or standby). The generic RTC framework triggers wakeup alarms, which are used to exit those states. - Measures some aspects of suspend time ... this uses "jiffies" until someone converts it to use a timebase that works properly even while timer IRQs are disabled. - Triggered by a command line parameter. By default nothing even vaguely troublesome will happen, but "test_suspend=mem" will give you a brief STR test during system boot. (Or you may need to use "test_suspend=standby" instead, if your hardware needs that.) This isn't without problems. It fires early enough during boot that for example both PCMCIA and MMC stacks have misbehaved. The workaround in those cases was to boot without such media cards inserted. * serial: turn serial console suspend a boot rather than compile time optionAndres Salomon2007-10-181-11/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently, there's a CONFIG_DISABLE_CONSOLE_SUSPEND that allows one to stop the serial console from being suspended when the rest of the machine goes to sleep. This is incredibly useful for debugging power management-related things; however, having it as a compile-time option has proved to be incredibly inconvenient for us (OLPC). There are plenty of times that we want serial console to not suspend, but for the most part we'd like serial console to be suspended. This drops CONFIG_DISABLE_CONSOLE_SUSPEND, and replaces it with a kernel boot parameter (no_console_suspend). By default, the serial console will be suspended along with the rest of the system; by passing 'no_console_suspend' to the kernel during boot, serial console will remain alive during suspend. For now, this is pretty serial console specific; further fixes could be applied to make this work for things like netconsole. Signed-off-by: Andres Salomon <dilinger@debian.org> Acked-by: "Rafael J. | | | | | | | | | | | | Dependencies of CONFIG_SUSPEND and CONFIG_HIBERNATION introduced by commit 296699de6bdc717189a331ab6bbe90e05c94db06 "Introduce CONFIG_SUSPEND for suspend-to-Ram and standby" are incorrect, as they don't cover the facts that (1) not all architectures support suspend and (2) SMP hibernation is only possible on X86 and PPC64 (if CONFIG_PPC64_SWSUSP is set). * Introduce CONFIG_SUSPEND for suspend-to-Ram and standbyRafael J. Wysocki2007-07-291-9/+32
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Introduce CONFIG_SUSPEND representing the ability to enter system sleep states, such as the ACPI S3 state, and allow the user to choose SUSPEND and HIBERNATION independently of each other. Make HOTPLUG_CPU be selected automatically if SUSPEND or HIBERNATION has been chosen and the kernel is intended for SMP systems. Also, introduce CONFIG_PM_SLEEP which is automatically selected if CONFIG_SUSPEND or CONFIG_HIBERNATION is set and use it to select the code needed for both suspend and hibernation. The top-level power management headers and the ACPI code related to suspend and hibernation are modified to use the new definitions (the changes in drivers/acpi/sleep/main.c are, mostly, moving code to reduce the number of ifdefs). There are many other files in which CONFIG_PM can be replaced with CONFIG_PM_SLEEP or even with CONFIG_SUSPEND, but they can be updated in the future. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. | * [PATCH] encrypt suspend data for easy wipingAndreas Steinmetz2005-09-051-0/+12
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The patch protects from leaking sensitive data after resume from suspend. During suspend a temporary key is created and this key is used to encrypt the data written to disk. When, during resume, the data was read back into memory the temporary key is destroyed which simply means that all data written to disk during suspend are then inaccessible so they can't be stolen lateron. Think of the following: you suspend while an application is running that keeps sensitive data in memory. The application itself prevents the data from being swapped out. Suspend, however, must write these data to swap to be able to resume lateron. Without suspend encryption your sensitive data are then stored in plaintext on disk. This means that after resume your sensitive data are accessible to all applications having direct access to the swap device which was used for suspend. If you don't need swap after resume these data can remain on disk virtually forever. Thus it can happen that your system gets broken in weeks later and sensitive data which you thought were encrypted and protected are retrieved and stolen from the swap device. * | [ACPI] IA64-related ACPI Kconfig fixesLen Brown2005-08-251-0/+1
|/ | | | | | | | | | | Build issues were mostly in the ACPI=n case -- don't do that. Select ACPI from IA64_GENERIC. Add some missing dependencies on ACPI. Mark BLACKLIST_YEAR and some laptop-only ACPI drivers as X86-only. Let me know when you get an IA64 Laptop. Signed-off-by: Len Brown <len.brown@intel.com>
* [PATCH] swsusp: only allow it when it makes sensePavel Machek2005-06-251-2/+2
